Miami forward Eric Wynalda has been loaned to F.C. Saarbrncken of the German Third Division through Dec. 19. Wynalda — who played for Saarbrncken for two seasons (1992-94) while the team was in the First and Second Division — has been training with his former club since the beginning of the week. He had eight goals in the First Division and 12 goals the next season in the Second Division. The club elected to pick him up on loan as it attempts to gain promotion to the Second Division. He is expected to rejoin the Fusion in January when the team begins training for the 2000 season. “It’s a very unique and special situation. I’m excited about playing forSaarbrncken because I have so many friends there and so many memories.” said Wynalda. “Now I have an opportunity to help the team move to the Second Division.” “Eric is a competitive player who needs to be on the field,” said Fusion managing director Doug Hamilton. “With this arrangement, Saarbrncken will gain a valuable asset, and the Fusion will be rewarded when Eric comes back to camp in top playing shape.” Wynalda, the all-time leading scorer in U.S. national team history with 32 goals in 102 international games, was forced to sit out most of the ’99 season because of an ACL tear to his left knee suffered early in the year while playing on loan with Leon of Mexico’s First Division. After his injury, the veteran was traded from San Jose to Miami in midseason. On Sept. 4 he made a return to the field, starting in six games and recording two goals and an assist to spearhead the Fusion’s run toward the playoffs.
