San Jose Clash forward Eric Wynalda, a crucial performer for the U.S. national team, has suffered a sprained ligament in his knee and will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks. Wynalda suffered the injury when he collided with Dallas Burn keeper Garth Lagerwey during a shootout attempt in San Jose’s loss to Dallas on April 5. “I had my foot planted and he rolled into it,” Wynalda said. “It wasn’t his fault, though. I just got too close to him.” An April 6 MRI revealed that the injury was a sprain of the ligament connecting the tibia and fibula. Wynalda will be able to resume training in 3-4 weeks, but will need another 1-2 weeks of training before playing in a match. He has set the May 16 doubleheader (San Jose vs. Miami, USA vs. Macedonia) at Spartan Stadium as the date he hopes to return to action. “Obviously, we’re relieved that it’s not fractured and it’s not as serious as we first thought,” said San Jose coach Brian Quinn. “If it’s three or four weeks, that not good news, but it’s not as bad as it might have been. Obviously, we want to get him back as soon as possible.”
