Nobody at Chelsea is happy with the William Gallas situation, not Gallas, not his agent, not the club’s directors, and certainly not manager Jose Mourinho. After the Chelsea defender failed to turn up for preseason training in the U.S., Mourinho gave his number 13 to new-recruit Michael Ballack. Gallas had been told to join the squad for its brief American tour, but he relented, first by asking for a vacation extension following a long World Cup, and then by failing to turn up altogether. “It’s not only me that is upset – we’re all upset,” said Mourinho. “Everybody is upset because we had a strong family and a strong group and this has shown a lack of respect to everybody and I don’t like that.” Such behavior seems like a precursor to an exit, but Mourinho declares that the player, who only has one year remaining on his contract, won’t get off that easy; he could even be forced to see out the remainder of his contract in the reserves. Pierre Frelot, Gallas’ agent, wouldn’t comment on his future at Chelsea, but confirmed that he would meet with Chelsea’s directors next week. Regarding the incident, Frelot said, “He needed to have more rest because of the World Cup and that is the reason why he was away a bit longer.” As far as his shirt number being given away, Frelot said, “That is another problem. We are not officially informed of any change.”
