Maybe all that complaining has finally paid off: it looks like Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will get to sign one defender this week to alleviate the crisis that’s been created by the long-term injuries to John Terry and Khalid Boulharouz. The question now is what kind of funds the Chelsea board has made available to Mourinho; Manchester City right back Micah Richards and Bolton center back Tal Ben Haim are said to be at the top of Mourinho’s shopping list, although the former is far more expensive at $35.3 million. Ben Haim, who is out of contract this summer, would cost a far more reasonable $5.8 million. The Independent says that it’s now up to Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon to broker a deal that would release the necessary funds for buying a defender before the transfer market closes in 17 days time. Mourinho has complained vociferously about the decision of club owner Roman Abramovich not to release any funds to bolster Chelsea’s injury-hit squad. Indeed, Abramovich’s defiance has led to widespread rumors that Mourinho has had enough, and could even leave the club before the end of the transfer window. Despite what looks to be rapidly turning into a civil war between Mourinho and Abramovich, the Chelsea players have made it clear that they don’t want to see Mourinho go under any circumstances. Captain John Terry, who’s been out injured for several months, said he would speak with owner Abramovich to make it known that the players support the manager. “Of course, we want him here,” said Arjen Robben, Saturday’s man of the match in Chelsea’s 4-0 demolition of Wigan at Stamford Bridge. “The relationship between the group and the manager is fantastic and we will keep it there.”
