St. John’s continues to lead FIU 2-0 at halftime of the NCAA championship match in Richmond, Va.
St. John’s dominated most of the play in the first half — FIU has not been able to string passes together, and the Red Storm defense has stifled Panther forward Ignace Moleka.
FIU had one excellent scoring opportunity late in the half, but Danny Vargas’ header off of a free kick bounced just wide of the goal.
St. John’s was denied a third goal just 90 seconds before the intermission, when Marconi Steele knocked away a powerful St. John’s volley that was headed towards an open net after a wild goalmouth sequence.
John Carroll (16th) and Steele (21st) have been booked for FIU.
