North Carolina leads Connecticut 1-0 at halftime of the NCAA Women’s championship match in Greensboro, N.C. Cindy Parlow’s 21st minute goal was the only scoring in a first half dominated by the Tar Heels. After the opening five minutes, North Carolina dominated possession, much the way Notre Dame did against UConn in the semifinals on Friday. The Carolina goal occurred when Robin Confer took the ball down the left side to the end line and crossed back towards the top of the box. Lindsay Stoecker, who started in place of the injured Laurie Schwoy, ran down the ball, turned, and chipped it into the box, where Raven McDonald flicked it on to Parlow. The U.S. national team forward volleyed the ball into the goal past charging UConn keeper Heather Stone. Strong winds have been a factor in all the games this weekend. Teams going against the wind have generally had a very difficult time scoring goals. UConn will be with the wind in the second half.
