North Carolina has defeated Connecticut 2-0 to win the 1997 NCAA Championship. The Tar Heels have now won two consecutive titles. UConn, with the wind at its back, pressured UNC for most of the second half, but were thwarted by the Tar Heel defense, which allowed just one goal in the entire tournament. In the 88th minute, North Carolina added an insurance goal on a counterattack. Defender Nel Fettig played a ball over the top to Robin Confer, who was about 35 yards out from the UConn goal. Confer beat a Husky defender to the ball and then chipped it over keeper Heather Stone, who was off her line, from just outside the box. North Carolina concluded an undefeated season with a 27-0-1 record, while Connecticut finishes 23-4-0. A game summary will be posted shortly.
