The U.S. women’s U-20 national team crushed Iceland 4-0 in its second Group B match at the Nordic Cup Aug. 5. With the win, the U.S. needs only a tie in its final first-round match against host Denmark to advance to the championship game. The U.S. held a commanding 20-2 shot advantage over Iceland, but had a difficult time finding space in the attacking third, as Iceland dropped all eleven players back into its own half for much of the match. Three North Carolina players combined to give the U.S. its first goal in the 17th minute. Robin Confer’s driven corner kick went to the far post, where Laurie Schwoy spun the ball back into the middle with her right foot before falling over the endline. Cindy Parlow then headed Schwoy’s pass into the middle of the net for her second goal of the tournament (she also scored the first U.S. goal in its 3-0 win over Sweden). Notre Dame forward Jen Streiffer scored the second U.S. goal eighteen minutes later when she ran onto a pass from Parlow on the right wing and volleyed the ball out of the air and into the net from about five yards away. The U.S. continued to apply pressure in the second half, and in the 51st minute, Duke midfielder Kristy Whelchel collected a poor clearance from the Iceland defense and crossed the ball into the box, where Streiffer flicked it with her head to Michelle French. The U.S. captain chested the ball down and blasted a rocket into the right corner for her second goal of the tournament. Schwoy wrapped up the scoring eight minutes from time when she chipped Iceland’s keeper from 16 yards after French one-timed another poor clearance by Iceland. “With each half the team is playing better and better, and we did well to combat the frustrating style of Iceland,” said Parlow. “We need to play better in our final two games, but the team is extremely united to win this tournament.” Aug. 5 in Naestved, Denmark USA 4 Iceland 0.
