Former Indiana player and coach Joe Kelley died of cancer on Saturday morning. Kelley was the first coach of the Hoosiers' women's program, leading the varsity program of its first nine years (1993-2001). He had previously started the IU women's club program, beginning its quest to gain varsity status in 1977.
Kelley served as an assistant coach on the men's team for 14 years under legendary former coach Jerry Yeagley, serving as an assistant coach from 1978-1980 and again in 1982-1992. He was an All-American at Indiana in 1974 after transferring from Meramec Community College. Kelley is survived by his wife, Mary, and his son Joshua.
