MLS players Ryan Nelsen (D.C. United) and Simon Elliott (Los Angeles Galaxy) teamed up for the winning goal to give New Zealand a 1-0 win Sunday over Australia in the final of the Oceania Nations Cup at Auckland's Ericsson Stadium and qualify the All Whites for the 2003 Confederations Cup. Nelsen scored with a header off Elliott's free kick in the 79th minute to give New Zealand the win over Australia, who was playing without its European-base stars. Nelsen and Elliott were two of five U.S.-based players on the All Whites squad. The others were Duncan Oughton (Columbus Crew, MLS), Gerard Davis (Stanford University) and Glenn Collins (Carolina Dynamite, D3 League). Tahiti beat Vanuatu, 1-0, in the third-place game.
