Canadian Theodore Antonopoulos was fined $138 and ordered to remove the Greek flag he painted on his garage door after Greece won the 2004 European Championship, because it violated an ordinance prohibiting ''a sign that is painted or reproduced on a building.'' The Montreal Gazzette reported neighbors had mixed feelings about it, one saying, ''I wouldn't complain about it. But I do wonder what would happen if all the Italians on our street started painting Italian flags.''
An editorial in the Montreal Gazzette suggested a compromise – that Antonopoulos can keep the flag on his garage door if he repaints it a neutral color when the next European champion is crowned.
