Randy Evans has resigned after nine years as the women’s head coach at the University of Oklahoma.
Evans’ decision follows the Sooners’ second straight losing season. They finished 6-10-3 in 2007 and failed to make this week’s Big 12 Tournament in San Antonio.
Evans arrived from Vanderbilt, where he was an assistant in 1999, and turned around a program that had won just 11 of 47 games in its first three years.
After going 4-13-1 in 1999, OU had winning records in five of its next six seasons under Evans and made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2003. He enjoyed his best season in 2005 when the Sooners went 13-6-1.
“I am proud to be leaving the program on a firm foundation,” Evans said, “and wish the new coach all the best in taking this wonderful group of young women to the next level of success.”
Oklahoma shouldn’t lack for candidates to replace Evans.
“We are certain that this new vacancy will attract great interest nationwide and we will be aggressive in seeking the best and brightest candidates,” Athletics Director Joe Castiglione said. “In light of the nearly $5 million facilities upgrades we have made in soccer and the tremendous support services we have in place, I am confident that this program can and will compete consistently at the highest level.”
