The U.S. women's national team, as expected, claimed its berth at the Athens Olympics, but Canada's found its summer schedule suddenly empty.
The Americans dominated host Costa Rica, 4-0, Wednesday at the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament, winning its semifinal with goals by Aly Wagner, Abby Wambach, Kristine Lilly and Shannon Boxx.
In the opener at Nacional Stadium in San Jose, Mexico stunned Canada, 2-1, earning its place in Greece at the expense of the Women's World Cup semifinalists.
Maribel Dominguez scored two goals, and the Mexicans' Yankee defense, led by former Colgate University goalkeeper Jennifer Molina, held off the Canadians at the end.
''It's not a performance we're proud of,'' Pellerud told the Canadian Press wire service. ''Our team is devastated. There are some players on our team who realize this could be their last chance [to play at an Olympics]. It is a very emotional time for us right now.''
Canada hadn't lost to Mexico in 10 previous meetings, outscoring the Tricolores, 38-4.
''As coaches, we were surprised by our poor start to the game,'' Pellerud told CP. ''We did everything to prepare the team for what Mexico does and doesn't do, and yet we didn't play well. Mexico did not do anything to surprise us. In fact, they didn't really play a good game. We just underperformed.''
Dominguez scored from a long ball in the 25th minute and blasted home a deflected ball in the 60th to send the Mexicans to a 2-0 lead. Calgary high-schooler Aysha Jamani halved the deficit in the 83rd minute, and Canada couldn't profit from its dominance in the closing minutes.
Molina made several big saves and was strong in the air. Mexico also benefited from strong performances by a trio of American defenders, captain Monica Gonzalez, former University of Miami standout Lisa Gomez and current Cal State Fullerton star Marlene Sandoval.
Dominguez and Jamani share the tournament goalscoring lead with six.
Mexico and Canada also met in a decisive qualifier, at the 2002 Gold Cup, for a berth in last year's Women's World Cup. Canada won that encounter, 2-0, on a pair of own goals.
Canada reached the semifinals of the World Cup last fall, upsetting China in the quarterfinals. Mexico, which finished third in the Gold Cup, lost a playoff to Japan for the final World Cup berth.
No drama for U.S.
The second match wasn't nearly so dramatic, with the Americans outshooting Costa Rica, 20-1, while holding possession for long stretches of action. The U.S. women have not surrendered a goal to the Ticas in four meetings.
Wagner provided a fifth-minute lead, a diving header after Lilly flicked on Mia Hamm's cross, and Wambach and Lilly added goals three minutes apart later in the first half. Boxx scored six minutes into the second half.
Wambach, who has scored in all four U.S. qualifying matches, finished a Joy Fawcett long ball in the 26th minute, and Lilly netted her 95th international goal with a 29th-minute free kick from just beyond the 18 after Boxx was cut down.
Boxx scored a beauty in the 51st, volleying a side-foot flick from Shannon MacMillan off a Hamm throw-in. The goal was Boxx's fourth of the tournament and ninth in 16 international matches.
''You can't just show up in Costa Rica and expect to qualify for the Olympics,'' U.S. coach April Heinrichs said. ''It's an honor to coach these players and be a part of this organization. The commitment to excellence is 365 days a year, so to bring this group to Costa Rica, to train as hard as they did, and to be able to achieve our goal of advancing to the Olympics is very exciting for everyone.''
The United States and Mexico will meet in a meaningless final on Friday, a rematch of the Americans' 2-0 Group B victory Sunday. Canada faces Costa Rica for third place, also meaningless. Canada won Monday's Group A clash, 2-1.
Six nations have qualified for the 10-nation Olympic field. Greece, an international patsy which has several Americans on its roster, is in as host for the Aug. 11-26 tournament. Champion Germany and runner-up Sweden advanced as Europe's top two finishers at last fall's Women's World Cup. Brazil was awarded South America's berth when CONMEBOL decided not to stage a qualifying tournament.
Oceania's three-nation qualifying tournament began Tuesday, with Australia virtually assuring its berth with a 10-0 romp over Papua New Guinea on Thursday. PNG beat Fiji, 2-0, in the opener; Australia and Fiji play on Saturday.
Africa's qualifier will be determined in a two-match series between Nigeria and South Africa. The opener will be played March 12 in Pretoria.
Asia's qualifying tournament is slated for April 18-24 in Japan. The top two teams will advance.
