Carlos Ruiz, the 22-year-old Guatemalan who joined the Los Angeles Galaxy this season, has scored all five of his team’s goals in its first three games. On Wednesday, he discussed his stellar start. Ruiz’s opening Comments: “We have played three games as the home team where it is our priority to win those games. Unfortunately, the last game we could only manage a tie against Dallas. [Los Angeles beat D.C. United and Chicago in its first two games, with Ruiz scoring overtime gamewinners.] -All three games have been great and I think we should have won as the home team. We have played two of the best clubs in the league so far. We are going to play our first match away from the Rose Bowl and that is where the Galaxy will have to show that we are true contenders for the title.” General impression of MLS: “Major League Soccer is quite different from Guatemalan soccer. Here, the game is much quicker and more aggressive. I have seen a lot of great players with a very high standard of play. Most of all, soccer is on the ascent as compared to soccer from other parts of the CONCACAF region.” On origin the origin of his nickname “El Pescadito” (the Little Fish: “In Guatemala, it is a tradition for all the players to get a nickname. I am not sure who it was who gave me the nickname, whether it was my youth division teammate with Municipal or a friend. In Guatemala, I am better known as +El Pescadito+ than my proper name.” On MLS’s image in Central America: “I can’t speak for all Central American countries, but in Guatemala we pay special attention to MLS because of the Guatemalans that have been in the league — guys like Jorge Rodas, Martin Machon, etc. That kept a focus on the league. It is perceived as a very competitive league. It was important that MLS had the major names of Carlos Valderrama, Hristo Stoitchkov and Marco Etcheverry. Most of all it is seen as a league that is moving up and moving forward.” On the amount of fouls he has suffered: “In Guatemala, this did not happen so frequently because the style of play was slower and more technical. Major League Soccer is quicker and more aggressive. However, when I played in Greece, I realized that the Europeans played a more physical and that is helping him play in MLS.” On the close finishes of Galaxy games (all three have gone to overtime): “I don’t know how well the team played prior to my arrival. It is true that we have been in very close games, but we have won two of them and we sit in first place. That is how a soccer teams are judged, by their results.” On his decision to come to MLS: “My main objective was to play abroad. I had an open mind as to where I would go. I had chances to go to Chile, Mexico and the United States. Municipal had the best offer from MLS. I am happy to be in MLS and I feel that the League has a solid level of play.”
