Former U.S. national team and Los Angeles Galaxy head coach Lothar Osiander has been named as the new coach of the U.S. Pro-40 Select team. Osiander replaces Tim Hankinson, who was named coach of the Tampa Bay Mutiny June 8. He was U.S. national team coach from 1986-88, and coached the Olympic team in both 1988 and 1992. He helped to develop many of the U.S. national team stars who will be on display in France, including Mike Burns, Joe-Max Moore, Cobi Jones, Alexi Lalas, Tab Ramos, Claudio Reyna and Brad Friedel. He has coached numerous teams at the club level, and was the inaugural head coach of MLS’s Los Angeles Galaxy, which advanced to the 1996 MLS Cup final. Most recently, he had served as John Kowalski’s assistant coach with Tampa Bay. “I am delighted to be part of U.S. Pro-40 and Project-40,” Osiander said. “My passion in soccer has always been to develop the United States’ top young players, and being part of this innovative program affords me the opportunity to get back to what I love.” He inherits a team with 18 games remaining in its inaugural A-League season. U.S. Pro-40 Select is currently tied for sixth in the Pacific Division. The team’s first game with Osiander in charge will be June 12, when the U.S. Pro-40 Select squad travels to Virginia to face the Richmond Kickers.
