Louisville climbs to top of Big East

MEN’S NEWS … In four seasons, Ken Lolla has accomplished at Louisville what he did at Akron. He’s built Cardinals into a national power. They climbed up to No. 7 — the highest-ranked Big East team in this week’s Soccer America Men’s Top 25 — with a 1-0 win over ranked South Florida and 4-0 victory over Syracuse.

Lolla’s arrival at Louisville coincided with the athletic department’s move to upgrade the men’s program. Lolla, who also worked in the U.S. U-18 national team program, used his national and international connections to bolster recruiting. He also convinced former U.S. World Cup player Brian Maisonneuve, who had worked at the under-17 residency program since 2005, to become an assistant at Louisville last year.

The ’09 Cardinals are one of the most experienced teams in the country. The lone true freshman to start is former U.S. U-18 Paolo DelPiccolo from the Colorado Rush. Englishman Mark Knight, a transfer from Santa Barbara City College, and two Michigan Wolves products, Freddie Braun and Colin Rolfe, lead the Big East’s highest-scoring team (2.55 goals a game) with five goals apiece.

The Cardinals’ success has boosted interest in the program. Louisville ranks third in the Big East with an average attendance of 1,345 fans a game.

* YEAGLEY FIRST. Todd Yeagley got his first Big Ten win as Wisconsin head coach on Sunday when the Badgers beat Michigan State, 2-1, on Scott Lorenz‘s goal in the 105th minute. It’s been a rough first season for the son of former Indiana coach Jerry Yeagley, so the win, only the second in nine games, was much appreciated. “From front to back, this was our best performance of the year,” Todd Yeagley said. “It was our toughness, team defending and our ability to get the ball to our key players and put pressure on the other team.”

Lorenz delivered some much needed offense, also getting the first goal that snapped the Badgers’ scoreless streak that had swelled to 313 consecutive minutes. The goals were his first in nine games after tallying a team-high 10 goals in 2008.

Foxhoven is chasing Portland legends’ records

WOMEN’S NEWS … Portland has had a few pretty good players in its day. Tiffeny Milbrett. Shannon MacMillan. Christine Sinclair. With her torrid scoring pace, Pilot sophomore Danielle Foxhoven is closing in the single-season records of the trio of international stars.

In her last three games, Foxhoven has scored three goals, two goals and four goals to give her 15 on the season. In the No. 2 Pilots’ WCC opener against Gonzaga on Saturday, Foxhoven had three goals by halftime, scored her fourth just before the hour mark and subbed out with 19 minutes remaining. Portland went on to win, 7-0. Last year, the former Colorado Rush star scored a team-high 16 goals.

* FRESHMAN SENSATION. The nation’s top scorer is Morgan Marlborough, whose three goals in Nebraska’s 5-2 win over Oklahoma gave her 19 goals, setting a Husker freshman record. Marlborough’s winning goal may have been her most impressive goal of the season. She was taken down by a Sooner defender on the right side of the penalty box, recovered to keep possession and dribbled through the Sooner defense before beating goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire with a shot off the far post.

* STREAKING CHIPPEWAS. Central Michigan won its ninth straight game — all by shutouts — when it defeated Mid-American foe Miami (Ohio), 1-0, on Sunday. Senior Amanda Waugh came off the bench to help set up the game’s only goal scored by Chelsi Abbott in the 31st minute. The nine consecutive shutouts tie the MAC record that Ohio set in 2004. CMU leads the conference with a 6-0-0 record.

Saturday night at La Playa Azul

[MY VIEW] From the closed-circuit broadcast in a restaurant filled with Honduran supporters and a handful of gringos to the game itself, Saturday night was special. Honduras-USA will go down as the greatest U.S. game few of us got to see and demonstrated that the attacking spirit Landon Donovan and the boys displayed at the Confederations Cup was no fluke.

Playing to its strengths sends USA to World Cup

[WORLD CUP 2010 QUALIFYING] The USA played to its strengths and Honduras played to its weaknesses Saturday night in San Pedro Sula, and by the margin of a single goal did the Americans win, 3-2, to clinch their place in the 2010 World Cup. By using balls in the air effectively, the USA exploited a shaky central defensive pairing of Maynor Figueroa and Osman Chavez, and put enough pressure on keeper Noel Valladares that he misplayed all three goals to some extent.

Fight to the finish

[WORLD CUP 2010 QUALIFYING] The USA was the  19th team to qualify for the 2010 World Cup when it beat Honduras, 3-2, on Saturday. An additional 31 teams are still alive. Four more teams — two from Europe and one each from Concacaf and South America — will clinch berths on Wednesday. But nine berths — four in Europe’s playoffs, three in Africa and one each in the Concacaf/South America and Asia/Oceania playoffs — won’t be decided until November.

What They’re Saying

“[If the game ended at] 93 minutes, I’d be a hero, 93 and a half you’re the worst coach, worst players in the world. That’s what it comes down to, and that’s the fine line between winning and losing, and we’re on the wrong side of that line too many times.”

Maradona’s belly slide [VIDEO]

[WORLD CUP 2010 QUALIFYING] Forward Martin Palermo rewarded Argentina coach Diego Maradona for bringing him back into the national team after a 10-year absence by scoring the stoppage-time gamewinnner in a 2-1 victory over Peru that puts the Argentines back on track. “At the interval I told him to go out and win the game, though we never imagined it would happen like this. It was yet another miracle by Saint Palermo,” said Maradona, who celebrated Palermo’s goal with a face-first slide on the wet grass of Buenos Aires’s Estadio Monumental.

No. 1 Stanford’s O’Hara adds to goal haul

WOMEN’S NEWS … Senior Kelley O’Hara got the first hat trick of her Stanford career to lead the No. 1 Cardinal to a 5-1 victory at No. 25 Oregon in Pac-10 play Sunday afternoon.

Continuing her recovery from an early-season illness, sophomore Lindsay Taylor had a goal and two assists to give her two goals and five assists in her last three games.

The five goals marked the sixth time in 13 wins that Stanford scored five or more goals in a game. “I still think we have a ways to go,” Cardinal coach Paul Ratcliffe cautioned. “But we’re growing together, the team chemistry’s great and we’re getting sharper each game.”

[UNDER-20 WORLD CUP] All four quarterfinals at the 2009 Under-20 World Cup in Egypt were decided by one goal — three in overtime — and when the dust settled Brazil, Costa Rica, Ghana and Hungary advanced to the final four. The Ticos completed the quartet when Marcos Urena scored in the 120th minute to give them a 2-1 win over the United Arab Emirates in Saturday’s late game.
