Columbus and Chicago Battle for Third Tie of Season
The Chicago Fire and Columbus Crew can't shake one another. In three games this season, they have played to three ties. The first time, Chicago fought back. The second ended in a scoreless draw. And on Sunday, the Crew fought back from two goals down. A pair of Peter Lowry goals put the Fire up […]
Goal Drought Threatens Sounders’ Playoff Quest
Sounders FC had a chance to solidify its playoff plans on Saturday at home against Chivas USA. Instead, it came away with a scoreless draw, marking the team’s fourth straight home game without a win. Despite a man advantage for over 20 minutes in the second half, Seattle couldn’t find the net against Chivas and […]
Earthquakes New Stadium Gets a Face, But Not Funds
The San Jose Earthquakes have yet to procure funding for their new stadium, but the team has still unveiled architectural renderings of its proposed 15,000-seat soccer stadium on a lot near Mineta San Jose International Airport. The drawings of the $60 million proposed project show a European-style, horseshoe-shaped stadium that hopes to have the closes […]
Maradona Losing More Than Games
No matter how hard he tries, Diego Maradona can't stay out of the spotlight. After Argentina's 1-0 loss to Paraguay, which put Argentina close to missing next year's World Cup, Maradona flew to Italy to check into a weight loss clinic and avoid a showdown with Julio Grondona, president of the Argentine soccer federation and […]
Philly home opener a tricky call
Put Toronto on the list of MLS teams that might be hedging on when it can open the 2010 MLS season at home. Philly, take note.
Carolina attack suddenly goes quiet
WOMEN’S NEWS … The North Carolina attack that scored seemingly at will against UCLA (7-2) and Notre Dame (6-0) couldn’t buy a goal on Sunday. The Tar Heels piled up 40 shots but had to settle for a 0-0 tie with unranked Auburn. The result snapped the defending national champions’ 17-game winning streak and dropped them from the top spot in the Soccer America Women’s Top 25 for the first time this season.
The result at the Duke Nike Classic came two days after a very sluggish performance in a 1-0 victory over LSU. To make matters worse, North Carolina star Nikki Washington was injured early in the second half of the LSU game and didn’t play against Auburn.
The closest Carolina came to scoring against Auburn was in the 86th minute when Casey Nogueira hit the crossbar with a free kick. Goalie Amy Howard was superb for Auburn with 12 saves, including a diving stop on an Alyssa Rich shot in overtime.
North Carolina coach Anson Dorrance blamed the result on his players’ atrocious work in the final third of the field. “‘We could have taken a film of today’s game and shown you every poor finishing decision that was possible,” he said. One bright spot for North Carolina was the play of Canadian freshman Ranee Premji in her first extended appearance for the Tar Heels.
* AGGIES’ SHOCKER. Portland, who was No. 3 in last week’s rankings, had won its first seven games by a margin of 22-2, but it was upset by Texas A&M, 3-1, Friday night in front of 3,542 fans at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. Junior Whitney Hooper scored two goals for A&M, which looked great in its opening game, a 3-0 win over USC, but has since suffered losses to Purdue, California and North Carolina.
“It’s nice to be winning again,” said Aggies coach G Guerrieri. “We’ve played a very difficult schedule, but we played those difficult games to get better and they helped us win this one today. Portland is a great team.”
* STANFORD ON TOP. Stanford, which beat Colorado, 4-0, and Wisconsin, 6-0, at its Nike Invitational to improve its record to 9-0-0, took over for North Carolina as the top team in the Soccer America Women’s Top 25.
On Sunday, the Cardinal overwhelmed Wisconsin with its multi-pronged attack. Kelley O’Hara scored her 10th goal, Christen Press had a goal and two assists, and Teresa Noyola was in superb form with a pair of assists. Freshman Mariah Nogueira added two goals to become the sixth Stanford player to have a multi-goal game.

Akron puts some Zip in its attack
MEN’S NEWS … Akron confirmed its No. 1 ranking in the Soccer America Men’s Top 25 by capturing the tournament it hosted this weekend with wins over Indiana (1-0) and Saint Louis (4-0).
The Zips, who lost 2008 Hermann Trophy winner Steve Zakuani to MLS’s Seattle Sounders FC, has been getting their scoring by committee. Sophomore Michael Nanchoff, son of former U.S. international George Nanchoff, had the winning goal against Indiana on a free kick. Sophomore Teal Bunbury, who scored twice against SLU, is the son of former Canada star Alex Bunbury.
Sophomores Kofi Sarkodie and Darlington Nagbe connected on a highlight-reel goal to open the scoring against Saint Louis. Freshman Yoram Mwila, who first came to Ohio from Zambia in 2006 to attend Brad Friedel‘s Premier Soccer Academies as part of the Grassroots Soccer Partnership, finished out the scoring with his third goal of the season.
Akron dominated the struggling Billikens, outshooting them, 21-3. “If we are on the ball enough, we are going to find the seams,” Akron coach Caleb Porter said. “That’s what happened today, and we put the game away.”
* CROWD COUNT:
— The sell-out crowd of 2,443 fans for the Akron-Indiana game set a record for Lee Jackson Field.
— No. 2 North Carolina handed Duke its first loss of the season, winning, 1-0, before 4,439 fans, the second largest men’s crowd in Fetzer Field history.

Wizards’ win keeps them in the hunt
[MLS PLAYOFF WATCH] The one-two teams in both conferences stayed where they were, with the respective leaders, the Crew and Dynamo, both on top with 43 points. Columbus (11-4-10) rallied for a 2-2 tie away to Chicago (10-6-10) to maintain a three-point lead over the Fire, and Houston (12-8-7) prevailed at home, 3-2, against Real Salt Lake to stay two points ahead of Los Angeles (10-5-11), which beat Toronto, 2-0. Here is our weekly rankings of the wild-card teams chasing the four spots behind the first and second teams in each conference, which qualify automatically for the playoffs.
What They’re Saying
“Had the referee blown 30 seconds or so earlier, at which point everyone other than United fans were convinced the game was over, we’d have been a substantial seven figure sum better off.”
— Graham Sharpe, spokesman for bitter bookmakers William Hill, which lost $1.6 million to bettors who waged that Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal would all win last weekend. Michael Owen scored Man U’s gamewinner in the sixth minute of stoppage time. (Reuters)
Playoff pairings are set
[USL-1] The USL First Division field had been set since Sept. 11, so the final week determined the first-round pairings for the six teams behind regular-season champion Portland. Carolina, which had never advanced to the playoffs, took second place and will defending champion Vancouver in the first round. Other first-round pairings: Puerto Rico-Rochester and Charleston-Montreal. Complicating the playoff picture for the Islanders is their home game Tuesday against Saprissa of Costa Rica in the Concacaf Champions League.

Ferguson praises Owen, Hughes fumes after sensational Manchester derby
[ENGLAND] Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson called it probably the greatest Manchester derby, and few fans would doubt him after United won the see-saw match, 4-3, on what Ferguson called a “world-class” goal by Michael Owen six minutes into stoppage time. On the other side, City manager Mark Hughes said his team was robbed after the fourth official had indicated that only four minutes of additional time would be played.
Mystifying PK calls and the witch-hunt effect
We’re not going to solve this mystery of exactly what it is that referees see when they do or not give penalty kicks. Well, not this week, anyhow. Two prime examples of mystifying calls happened over the weekend — one penalty that wasn’t given (that should have been), and one that was given (that should not have been). The comments in brackets represent my opinions, of course.
No. 1 North Carolina held to a 0-0 tie by Auburn
WOMEN’S NEWS … Auburn held No. 1 North Carolina to a 0-0 tie Sunday at the Duke Nike Classic, snapping Carolina’s seven-game winning streak to start the season. The Tar Heels outshot Auburn, 40-4, but were stymied by Tiger keeper Amy Howard, who made 12 saves.
Carolina’s tie left only No. 2 Stanford (9-0-0), No. 4. Boston College (8-0-0), No. 9. Maryland (8-0-0) and No. 12. South Carolina (8-0-0) are the only unbeaten and untied Top 25 teams. The only Top 25 team to lose on Sunday was No. 24 Denver, which fell to Oregon State, 3-1.

Dynamic Huckerby will be missed
Unlike many foreign players who’ve come to America and promised much but delivered little, Darren Huckerby gave everything: his zealous commitment to team, his unquenchable daring to scorch opponents, his indomitable spirit, his puckish humor, and ultimately, his health.
