What They’re Saying

“We absolutely wanted to win for our player who remains in the United States and has suffered so much, and we did it. It was his victory tonight.”

— Coach Francis Gillot after Sochaux won, 2-0, at first-place Lyon, in the club’s first game since American star Charlie Davies was seriously injured in a car accident Tuesday in Northern Virginia. The win was Sochaux’s first at Lyon in 18 years. (American actor Clint Eastwood, in Lyons to receive a film award, kicked out the first ball.) (L’Equipe.fr)

Chris Rolfe owed an apology

I am not one of those who feel that the refereeing in MLS is inferior. We hear from time to time — quite often, from Brit imports — that MLS referees are incompetent and not in the same class as the English Premier League refs. What those critics forget — or, more probably, haven’t the wit to realize — is that we have by now seen years and years of English Premier League games and we know quite a lot about the standard of English referees. It is good, certainly, but not perfect by any means.

Stanford ends UCLA’s long Pac-10 streak

WOMEN’S NEWS … No. 1 Stanford earned its first win over No. 4 UCLA since 2002 with a 2-0 victory Sunday before an overflow crowd of 2,400 at Cagan Stadium. The Bruins were riding a 22-game Pac-10 winning streak heading into the contest.

For only the second time in 14 games, high-scoring forwards Kelley O’Hara (18 goals) or Christen Press (14) didn’t score for the Cardinal, who won on an own goal and goal by sub Cam Levin 116 seconds apart in the second half.

The Stanford defense, anchored by freshman Alina Garciamendez and senior Alicia Jenkins in the middle, did an outstanding job against UCLA, which had won 12 straight games.

— In another Top 25 matchup of Pac-10 teams, No. 9 USC beat No. 17 California, 3-2, on Alyssa Davila‘s golden goal.

* TOP 25 UPSETS. Three Top 25 teams fell to unranked teams on Sunday:

South Carolina falls from unbeaten ranks

WOMEN’S NEWS … No. 5 South Carolina lost for the first time in 15 games this season when it fell at No. 24 Georgia, 2-1, on a pair of Carrie Patterson goals.

The Gamecocks led on Kayla Grimsley‘s team-leading eighth goal of the season in the eighth minute, but they couldn’t hold the lead in chilly Athens. “It’s a learning experience for us,” South Carolina coach Shelley Smith said. “The good thing is we’ve played so well that we haven’t been put in this position all year.

South Carolina’s loss leaves only two unbeaten teams:

— No. 1 Stanford got two goals apiece from Kelley O’Hara and Christen Press in a quarter of an hour to beat No. 9 USC, 4-0, and improve to 14-0-0. (O’Hara and Press have combined for 31 of the Cardinal’s 52 goals.)

— Dayton (9-0-5) had its game at St. Bonaventure cancelled because of snow.

* LEROUX-MORGAN REUNION. In the only other game involving Top 25 teams. No. 4 UCLA edged No. 17 California, 1-0, on Sydney Leroux‘s late goal. Leroux had better luck than Alex Morgan, her frontline partner on the 2008 U.S. Under-20 World Cup championship team, did for Cal. In the first half, Morgan hit the left post, and in the second half she rounded UCLA keeper UCLA keeper Chante Sandiford on a breakaway but hit the right post.

* PANTHER RECORD BREAKERS. Sophomore Sarah Hagen and senior Kate Megna both landed in the Wisconsin-Milwaukee record book after Megna set up Hagen for both goals in the Panthers’ 2-0 win over Detroit. Hagen has scored in a school-record eight straight games — including multiple goals in four straight contest — while Megna has a season-record 13 assists.

UCLA’s Perk back in action after scary injury

MEN’S NEWS … It’s been a rough couple of weeks for UCLA goalie Brian Perk. First, he got shelled at the Under-20 World Cup in Egypt, where the USA lost a pair of 3-0 decisions to Germany and South Korea and was knocked out in the first round for the first time in more than two decades. Then in his first game back with the Bruins, he was kicked in the face by a San Diego State player while diving for the ball and had to be taken to the hospital.

Fortunately, Perk was not seriously injured and was back in action Friday for No. 2 UCLA, earning the shutout for the Bruins in their 1-0 win over No. 13 California in front of 1,807 fans at Drake Stadium. David Estrada scored the only goal of the game in the 15th minute on an assist from fellow senior Kyle Nakazawa. The assist extended Nakazawa’s points scoring streak to eight games — matching UCLA’s unbeaten streak.

Perk didn’t have much to do in the first half — UCLA had a 12-1 edge in shots — but he made a diving save on Hector Jimenez‘s shot with 11 minutes remaining. Cal keeper David Bingham, who was also injured (hamstring) last week, made eight saves to keep the game close.

— No. 19 Stanford won a Pac-10 thriller, coming back from a goal down with three minutes to play and eventually beating San Diego State, 2-1, on the road thanks to a golden goal by Ryan Thomas on a free kick from 24 yards.

* STREAK CONTINUES. Monmouth got goals from sophomore Max Hamilton and Ryan Kinne within 90 seconds of each other late in the second half to come away with a 2-0 win at Bryant and improve its record to 12-0-1. Kinne, who helped the New York Red Bulls win the USL Super-20 championship this summer, leads the Northeast Conference with seven goals.
