BY RIDGE MAHONEY What is it about the Dallas Burn that makes the Chicago Fire blow leads? That disturbing notion is uppermost in the mind of Fire coach Bob Bradley as he prepares his team for a playoff series fraught with subplots. Game 1 is tonight (Sept. 20) in Chicago. Mike Jeffries left his job […]

BY SCOTT FRENCH, senior editor Mia Hamm may be the best-known soccer player, male or female, in this country, but she hasn’t been the best, not for some time, maybe never. No question Michelle Akers is the finest female player to step onto a soccer field, and Sun Wen and Tiffeny Milbrett have been far […]

In light of last week’s events, the New York Power and Washington Freedom have canceled scheduled trips to China. The Power was supposed to play three games against Chinese teams Guangdong Haiyin (Gao Hong’s club team), Beijing Construction and Shanghai Cable TV Oct. 18-29. The Freedom was to visit China Oct. 11-22.

A growing army of passionate soccer fans isfinally making the U.S. national team players feel less like visitors in their own land. As John Wright ripped some duct tape to secure a banner on the front-row railing at RFK Stadium, he marveled at the volume of red-clad U.S. fans behind it. His trip was well […]

Coaches took new seats at four of college’s soccer’s biggest men’s programs. In 1998, Bret Simon took his Creighton team to Stanford for a tournament. Little did he know he would return three years later as head coach of the Cardinal. That’s how college soccer coaching works. Simon’s move is only one element in a […]

Jovan Kirovski and Cory Gibbs each earned their first league starts over the weekend, but were part of losing efforts. Kirovski helped Crystal Palace to a midweek victory over Everton in Worthington Cup play, but could not prevent a 4-2 defeat at Portsmouth. Gibbs rated favorably in comparison to his St. Pauli teammates in a […]

Six reserves, all with four selections, were added to an 11-man lineup headed by Miami forward Alex Pineda Chacon (7 selections), San Jose midfielder Manny Lagos (6) and Miami defender Pablo Mastroeni (6). How much depth must a team have to be considered deep? The U.S. coaches might have thought their pool was a deep one last year, when 31 names appeared on the scoresheets of six qualifiers. But a nasty run of injuries – six players, four of them regulars, were not available for the 3-2 loss […]

A moment of silence for the victims of last Tuesday’s attack in the United States was observed before the Iran-Bahrain World Cup qualifier in Tehran. The 0-0 tie before 60,000 fans left Iran with a one-point lead over Saudi Arabia and a two-left lead over surprising Bahrain at the halfway point of the final round […]

Nearly all of the NCAA schedule was postponed or cancelled following Tuesday’s terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Three games involving Top 20 teams — California at Santa Clara, Florida State at Clemson and James Madison at […]

BY LYNN BERLING-MANUEL, President & Publisher … As has been said repeatedly, the games we play — soccer, baseball, football or whatever — seem so inconsequential in the wake of the horror of the terrorist attack on New York and Washington, D.C. Yet because of the enormous amount of media space and time devoted every […]
