John Gaughan Worcester, Mass. I have closely followed the rumors about Mexican striker Luis Hernandez an his potential move to MLS. It seems that all parties concede that Hernandez must play in L.A. because of the number of tickets he will sell there. However, San Jose and New England are the only two teams with an allocation available to sign a foreigner. As a faithful supporter of the Revs, I wonder if there is any chance Hernandez may end up in NE. I know Boston is not one of the first cities that comes to mind when people think of large Mexican-American communities. However, I was at the Mexico-USA World Cup qualifier in Foxboro that ended in a 2-2 draw with Hernandez scoring a goal. The game was played in Foxboro because it was thought it would give the U.S. a decided home-field advantage. The atmosphere at the game was fantastic, but not decidedly pro-American. The Mexican fans, if not greater in number, were definitely louder than the U.S. fans. All this leads back to my original point. Has Hernandez vowed to play only for the Galaxy? It seems that the league might want to reward a team and its fans. The Revs have been average at best in their history, yet their fans have always been great. Some say Hernandez will be an incredible draw in L.A. The truth is, he would be an incredible draw anywhere (except KC). If he comes to NE, there will be a definite attendance spike? Any chance, at all, that this will happen and make me very happy? Luis, you will love New England and our fans! Ridge Mahoney: If Hernandez says L.A., then L.A. it must be. Sending a superstar to an unbeaten team seems contrary to the parity-first policy of MLS, but the rules — such as they are — can be bent. Hernandez will draw fans in most MLS cities, and San Jose has also pushed for a top-flight Mexican player. I’d have to say New England is way down the list, and there really isn’t any list.
