Jose Cordova Monroe, La. Again, having to do with MLS playoff games … Why not hold playoff games under the same system as regular-season games: if tied at the end of regulation, play a golden-goal overtime period? If neither team accumulates five points after three games are played with the above system — i.e., theyÆre tied on three or four points — use a FIFA-style tiebreaker, such as: 1. Better goal differential in playoff series 2. Higher goals in favor in playoff series 3. Better head-to-head regular-season record And in the unlikely event that all of the above fail to break the tie, use the dreaded FIFA-style kicks from the penalty mark! If it works for the World Cup … Mike Woitalla: Jose, I like your suggestion. I especially like throwing in the regular-season performance as a tiebreaker, because I believe a teamÆs regular-season performance should have more impact than it currently does in MLS. (Such a long season, then eight out of 12 teams make the playoffs.) Throwing in the regular-season performance is reminiscent of the Mexican League playoffs. There, of course, its home-and-away — not best of three. But instead of using away-goals in case of an aggregate-goals tie, the team with the best overall regular-season record advances. Maybe thatÆs something for MLS to consider: If after Game 3, both teams share the same amount of points from the series, give the edge to the team with the best overall regular-season record.
