Peter of Bowie, Md. asks: I am interested in knowing what happened to an American goalie who had started for a few games last year for Tottenham Hotspur. I think his name is Espen Baardsen. Mike Woitalla: Baardsen, 23, was born and raised in Northern California and signed with Tottenham Hotspur in 1996. But with the likes of Kasey Keller and Brad Friedel dominating the U.S. national goalkeeping situation, Baardsen opted to play on a Norwegian passport — for which he is eligible by heritage. That choice made him a unique case: An American product who went to a World Cup for another country. He was a reserve for Norway at the 1998 World Cup. He has been capped four times by Norway. Baardsen moved from Premier League Tottenham, for which he made 22 league appearances but seemed destined to play a backup role in 2000-01, to First Division Watford last August. He has made 17 league appearances for Watford this season.
