Steve Flaherty My son is in high school considering journalism/broadcast journalism as a major in college. He is a soccer fanatic and ODP caliber player. I had two questions on his behalf. First, would you have any suggestions for him about his future career choice and second does Soccer America provide any opportunities such as freelance articles etc. Paul Kennedy: A couple of things to consider. My view, and I’m biased since I came this route, is to follow a liberal arts education — study history, English, economics, political science … whatever subjects interest your son. I majored in economics in college and then went to law school (I practiced three years before becoming the managing editor of SA in 1985). Your son can get a lot of practical journalism experience on the side — with school media outlets, internships/jobs at media outlets, etc. Our stories come from two sources — our in-house staff (seven of us) and writers who cover soccer for newspapers (beat writers). We don’t generally get other free-lance materials. I hope this is helpful.
