Andy Ohmer Indianapolis, Ind. I have noticed in the English Premier League the center referees’ have been wearing an ear piece. Why and to whom are they communicating with? Mike Woitalla: Andy, I understand that the linesman in England are know able to communicate with the center man via walkie-talkies. I’m assuming they’ve got small microphones pinned on their shirts somewhere. I will try to get some more information about how this method of communication is working and what sort of guidelines they’re working under. For example, are they only talking when some controversy comes up, or is there a constant back-and-forth? In a recent article about the prospects of using video assistance to determine whether the ball has crossed the line, top English ref Steve Lodge said, “We are prepared to move with the times and the introduction of walkie-talkies for linesman this season has been a success this season.” (If you have a question for a Soccer America Magazine editor, click “Q&A with SA Editors” in the left column of the home page under “Interactive.”)
