Aaron Pino Ft. Worth, Texas. I would be very curious to see a Soccer America column on the greatest soccer players of the past century. Instead of whining about why ESPN doesn’t include soccer players, just do your own list, and do not restrict the list to American players! Who would Paul Gardner, for instance, consider the 50 greatest soccer players of the past century? Or maybe have every regular editor and columnist weigh in on the subject! That would make for some fun conversations, anyway! You have a great magazine — keep up your fine international coverage! Mike Woitalla: Thanks for the great suggestion, Aaron. I’ll try and get the other editors (and myself) working on it. In the meanwhile, Paul Gardner’s picks of top players of the 1900s are already available. Gardner’s “All-Everything” team comes from a 1993 Soccer America column titled “A Team for the Ages.” It has recently been reprinted in Gardner’s new book, “SoccerTalk, Life Under the Spell of the Round Ball,” a compilation of 33 years of Gardner’s soccer writing in several publications, including Soccer America. What follows is Gardner’s “First All-Everything Team.” He has told me that he wouldn’t change it based on the last seven years, so it would stand as his all-century team. (In his book, you’ll also find his “Second All-Everything Team” and explanations and background on all his picks.) Goalkeeper Gordon Banks (England) Defenders Daniel Passarella (Argentina) Franz Beckenbauer (Germany) Carlos Alberto (Brazil) Nilton Santos (Brazil) Midfielders Obdulio Varela (Uruguay) Johan Cruyff (Netherlands) Diego Maradona (Argentina) Rivelino (Brazil) Forwards Garrincha (Brazil) Pele (Brazil) Coach Tele Santana (Brazil) (If you have a question for a Soccer America Magazine editor, click “Q&A with SA Editors” in the left column of the home page under “Interactive.”)
