Paul Minneapolis, Minn. What’s the story behind the slogan “You’ll Never Walk Alone” on the gate into Liverpool’s home stadium? I’ve been wondering ever since I heard a crowd singing it on an old Pink Floyd Album (ôMeddleö). Mike Woitalla: “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is the title of a song that went from Broadway musical to pop tune to soccer club anthem. ôYouÆll Never Walk Aloneö was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the musical ôCarousel,ö which opened on Broadway in 1945. In the early 1960s, fans on the ôKop,ö the famous section of LiverpoolÆs Anfield stadium, began singing pop hits. The Koppites belted out songs like the BeatlesÆ ôShe Loves Youö and ôI Like Itö by Freddie and the Dreamers. In 1963, Gerry and The Pacemakers hit the charts with a cover of ôYouÆll Never Walk Alone.ö Liverpool fans adopted it, stuck with it over the years, and the club eventually adopted it as its anthem and slogan. The lyrics of ôYouÆll Never Walk Aloneö: When you walk through a storm hold your head up high And don’t be afraid of the dark. At the end of a storm is a golden sky And the sweet silver song of a lark. Walk on through the wind, Walk on through the rain, Tho’ your dreams be tossed and blown. Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart And you’ll Never Walk Alone, You’ll Never Walk Alone.
