John Burns San Jose, Calif. Is there some reason why you have yet to print the roster of players that Bruce Arena has selected for the World Cup qualifier being played tomorrow in Columbus against Costa Rica? Mike Woitalla: Simply put, the U.S. Soccer Federation has refused to reveal the roster. In an Oct. 10 USA Today article, reporter Peter Brewington addressed Coach Bruce Arena about him being ômysteriousö about the roster, to which Arena replied, “Sure, that’s why we have the Bill of Rights.” Reading between the lines, it appears that Arena believes that keeping his personnel secret from the Costa Ricans could give the U.S. an edge. This is, to my recollection, the first time in recent history that U.S. Soccer hasnÆt released a training camp roster before a major game. HereÆs what we do know. Claudio Reyna, Eddie Lewis and Earnie Stewart are not available because of suspension. Brian McBride is injured. Tab Ramos is in camp, but is nursing an injury. On the keeper front, Kasey Keller and Brad Friedel are both reportedly in camp, but Keller is coming off an injury and Friedel has been injured since arriving in Columbus. Therefore, Tony Meola has been called into camp. (If you have a question for a Soccer America Magazine editor, click “Q&A with SA Editors” in the left column of the home page under “Interactive.”)
