George Adeff Westchester, Calif. A fellow at the office, who knows enough about soccer to know who Pele is, told me he’d heard on the radio that Pele was under indictment for murder as a result of a motorcycle accident. I’ve been looking for a news article on this but without success. Was this the King Pele or someone else going by that name? (I know there’s an African player who uses the name.) Mike Woitalla: It was not Pele. The report your friend heard was about Pele’s son, Edinho. A Brazilian court found Edinho guilty of vehicular manslaughter, coincidentally the same day Brazilian striker Edmundo went to jail for a similar offense. Edinho was handed a six-year semi-open sentence for his involvement in a fatal crash in Santos in 1992. The jury accepted the prosecution’s argument that Edinho had been racing another car, which hit and killed an elderly motorcyclist. Edinho denies the charge. He is appealing and is free until the new hearing takes place. The 29-year-old, who was raised in New York, is a retired goalkeeper, having played for Brazilian clubs Santos and Ponte Preta. He is currently working for his father’s marketing firm and studying economics.
