The mood at Real Madrid has improved as the Merengues have made a strong run to overtake Barcelona in the race for the 2007 Spanish league title. Less than four months ago, Madrid president Ramon Calderon ripped David Beckham for signing with MLS’s Los Angeles Galaxy, saying the Englishman was leaving to become a movie actor and no other team in the world wanted him.
Now, Calderon is full of praise for Beckham’s conduct and commitment at the club as his move to the Galaxy draws near. “I wish him all the best in the new project he is about to start in the United States,” Calderon said on television station Cuatro. “He has been an example for this club and continues to demonstrate it day by day. I was a little annoyed when he said he was leaving because I wasn’t expecting it, but he has made his decision and I am sure he will do well.”
The 32-year-old Beckham is suspended for Saturday’s clash against Espanyol and has four more league matches with Real left after that. His last game in a Real Madrid uniform could be a friendly in Israel against a joint Israeli-Palestinian team on June 19 in conjunction with a visit to the Peres Center for Peace, founded by Nobel Peace laureate Shimon Peres.
