Jose Antonio Reyes is determined to make his loan move from Arsenal to Real Madrid permanent, the Spanish winger said on Friday. “I’ve got a year to prove to the club, the president and the boss that I’m worth a place here,” the 23-year-old told a news conference. “Obviously, I don’t know if I’ll have return [to Arsenal] next year, but if I think about that I’ll be starting off on the wrong foot.” Reyes will most likely have to compete with Robinho and Raul for a starting place on Madrid’s left side. The striker moved to Arsenal in January 2004 for $33 million, a club record at the time, but he and his family both failed to adapt to life in London. “The climate and the language were very difficult for me, and my family wasn’t happy there either and they are the most important thing for me,” Reyes said. He also struggled to hold down a starting spot with the Gunners. The final straw, perhaps, was Manager Arsene Wenger’s decision to leave him on the bench for last season’s Champions League final.
