Claudio Reyna will move to Major League Soccer and most likely the New York Red Bulls in a matter of days, writes Ives Galarcep of the North Jersey Herald News. The Manchester City central midfielder has been thinking about returning to the States, Stuart Pearce told the Associated Press yesterday. Galarcep says the fact that Pearce is even willing to say that publicly makes his departure a foregone conclusion, despite his assertion that “Players will only be allowed to leave if it is in the best interests of the football club. Until anything is resolved on that, he stays a Manchester City player.” Galarcep believes that once Reyna is cleared to leave there can only be one destination for the New Jersey native: the Red Bulls. What remains to be seen is just how the New York club plans to acquire him. Retirement, waivers and trades have cleared plenty room in the Red Bulls’ coffers for a significant signing. Galarcep says the club could offer the 33-year-old Reyna a contract for the league maximum of $280,000, though Reyna would most likely be unwilling to take that kind of pay cut. The Bulls also have two designated player slots after trading Amado Guevara to Chivas USA for theirs. Using one of these would most likely be just fine by Bruce Arena, who has always been a great admirer of Reyna, whom he coached at the University of Virginia. This scenario is the more likely one, because as nice as it would be to attract David Beckham or Ronaldo to New York, there is fierce competition in the world market to attract such fading stars.
