The New York Times’ Jack Bell has another story on the season ahead for Claudio Reyna, which will be closely scrutinized following a poor first season in MLS last year with the New York Red Bulls. Despite another injury-hit season, Bell says Reyna “often looked confused, out of place and languorous on the field,” in the 21 games he started. In fact, in the interview, Bell notes that Reyna endured so much criticism for his performances last year that he seemed “reticent” to talk about it.

“I think last year was a big learning experience for me,” the Red Bulls captain said. “But I never had any doubts about returning this year. I have always wanted to stay and contribute to the squad. I’m committed and looking forward to the season.”

Juan Carlos Osorio, for one, is on Reyna’s side. “I think Claudio gets a bad rap,” the Red Bulls coach said. “He provides more than he gets credit for. Maybe when people see him on the pitch he is very casual. No, he’s smooth, effortless. He is looking very sharp. I have said many times that if he manages to keep healthy, he is a clever player for us, influential and able to make that final pass.” Bell, on location for the Red Bulls preseason training in Austria, says that Reyna will play a more attacking midfield role this season, linking the midfield to forwards Juan Pablo Angel and Jozy Altidore (or Oscar Echeverry)
