Olympique Marseille’s highly-rated midfielder Franck Ribery is starting to remind one of Arsenal’s Jose Reyes with his on-again, off-again stance about staying with the French club. Ribery yesterday played for OM during a UEFA Cup qualifying match against Young Boys Berne of Switzerland, which effectively Cup-tied him from playing in Europe with another club this season. “It’s true that I said I wanted to leave,” the player said, “but I have not forgotten that Marseille is my club, and I love this jersey.” Both Arsenal and Olympique Lyonnais had hopes of signing the French World Cup star, each offering higher wages and Champions League soccer next season. As recently as last Friday, Ribery stated his intention to leave Marseille in order to play in the Champions League. His agent, Bruno Heiderscheid, who certainly did his part to fan the flames of his client’s transfer rumors, was quoted yesterday on L’Equipe’s Web site as saying, “Franck will stay at Marseille. It’s the solution that I’ve always preferred.” Remaining with Marseille would mark the first time in his professional career that Ribery stayed with the same club for two consecutive seasons. Last summer, the French winger moved to Marseille from Turkish club Galatasaray. “I hope we have a good season,” Ribery said. “The most important thing is to finish in the top three to play in the Champions League.” If Marseille doesn’t achieve this, don’t expect the player to be back with them next season.
