An editorial appearing in the Salt Lake Tribune remonstrates Real Salt Lake owner Dave Checketts’ attempt at hiding the club’s financials from investors over the club’s plans to build a new stadium. And by investors, the unnamed author means the people of Salt Lake County. It seems that Checketts thought that sharing RSL’s financial info with “the county” meant Mayor Peter Coroon, Governor Jon Huntsman and a select-few others, but the editorial says that county officials have always realized that “county” means all of its residents, who would be footing some $55 million of the sports complex’s estimated $100 million bill. Checketts even went so far as to request in writing that no one but county officials see the club’s financial plans, but they came right back and told Checketts that they couldn’t guarantee such secrecy. “If that attitude killed the deal, then it killed it,” the editorial says. RSL has been making promises for months that the team would comply with the local government’s wishes while holding a different stance in private. Now it seems the county’s residents are wondering what the team has to hide. Surely RSL isn’t worried about its competitors-as a business venture, this is a league where all of the teams are partners, so that, the author says, is “bunk.” He says the people of Salt Lake need to see what they’re being asked to pay for.
