If Real Salt Lake does indeed get the go-ahead to build its soccer stadium outside Salt Lake City, kudos will have to be handed out to RSL’s management and Tom Dolan, the mayor of Sandy, where the proposed stadium would be built. Dolan most recently met with local representative Greg Curtis R-Sandy to see if he could help the project find more public funding. Curtis, however, is less optimistic, but he insists that he’ll give it the old college try. “I just really don’t know if I have the fight in me,” Curtis said. “That would involve a significant legislative fight. I’m not sure that my legislative colleagues are going to step in and say, ‘We’re going to do it.'” Curtis isn’t wild about the idea of running a bill before state legislature to fund a soccer stadium. Neither Dolan nor RSL would comment specifically on any bill speculation, although it’s clear that RSL is still fishing for more public funds. For his part, Sandy mayor Dolan is doing his best-even though he effectively pronounced the project “dead” late last summer. Curtis says that state funding simply isn’t going to happen if the county isn’t also on board. “They said (the funding deal is) still alive. I don’t believe it,” he said. A hotel tax has been passed, meanwhile, although the implementation of those funds has been left up to the county. It may very well end up paying for a new parking garage.
