Sao Paulo won the Brazilian championship for the third year running and for the sixth time overall with a 1-0 road win at Goias in the season's final game at the weekend. Striker Borges scored the first-half winner for Sao Paulo as it finished three points clear of Gremio.
Figueirense and former South American champion Vasco da Gama were relegated, joining Ipatinga and Portuguesa in the second division next season. Cruzeiro and Palmeiras finished third and fourth respectively to follow Sao Paulo and Gremio into next year's Copa Libertadores.
On Saturday, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) changed the referee for the Sao Paulo game after hearing of an alleged plot to manipulate the result. Wagner Tardelli was replaced by Jailson Macedo Freitas as a precautionary measure. The CBF stressed Tardelli's honesty in his 20 years as a referee, but gave no further details.
