Five players Schmid picked weren't part of the U.S. U-17 program or part of the U-20 program until this past year:

CHARLIE DAVIES. Forward is one of the best athletes to come into youth national team program in recent years. Has matured greatly in the last year and a half. Hails from New Hampshire but went to prep school at Brooks School in Massachusetts, where he starred at soccer and wrestling. Passed up offers from European clubs to go pro after being spotted at a U-17 tournament in Austria two years ago. Was 2004 Big East Rookie of the Year at Boston College. Eagles coach Eddie Kelly has compared Davies in intensity to baseball star Allen Iverson.

BENNY FEILHABER. Went from being a walk-on at UCLA two years ago to being selected to U-20 team after Schmid brought him in for December's training camp. Holding midfielder in the mold of Ned Grabavoy on 2003 U-20s in the UAE. Brazilian-born Feilhaber follows in the footsteps of former Bruins stars Cobi Jones (all-time U.S. cap leader) and Steve Shak (former MLS No. 1 draft pick) who were walk-ons. Helped Irvine Strikers win 2002 U-17 national championship.

WILL JOHN (Saint Louis). One of the most versatile attacking players on U-20s. Can play in midfield or up front. Brought into U-20 program last spring and leads the team with 12 caps and tied with four goals in 2004. Was leading scorer this past season for SLU (10 goals, 4 assists). Arguably the best product to ever come out of the Kansas City area. Father Emilio is a former MISL star.

SACHA KLJESTAN. Lanky midfielder (6-foot-1, 150 pounds) who debuted for U-20s last summer at Milk Cup in Northern Ireland. Was a first-team All-American as a sophomore at Seton Hall, where his older brother, Gordon, joined him after transferring from Cal State Fullerton. Sacha starred on U-18 Cal South team that finished second 2003 U.S. Youth Soccer ODP National Championships and played for JUSA Select club. Name pronounced '' KLAYS-tuh.''

MARVELL WYNNE (UCLA). Son of former Major League Baseball player of the same. Outside back bless with blazing speed and vertical leap. One of first players Schmid added after being named U-20 coach. At Poway (Calif.) High School ran 100 (10.7), 200 (21.87) and 400 meters (48.10). Played soccer with U-20 teammate Greg Dalby at Poway. First introduced to soccer at the age of 4 when his parents took him to see 4-year-old Robbie Tolan, son of former major leaguer Bobby Tolan play indoor soccer. Marvell considered baseball too slow.
