It’s not often that a coach calls a game disappointing when his team wins 10-0. That’s what Seattle Sounders head coach Neil Megson had to say after the demolition of Suriname champion Transvaal June 17 in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, the region’s equivalent of the European Cup or Libertadores Cup. “This was a disappointing game,” Megson said. “We played well. The game was over by halftime.” The 10 goals, five in each half, were a team record. Chugger Adair had a hat trick, while former New England Revolution midfielder Geoff Aunger had three assists. Mike Gailey and Kieran Barton added two goals apiece. Barton’s goals were his first for the Sounders in two years. Suriname, the former Dutch Guyana, has had little success in recent years, though dozens of players of Surinamese origin play pro soccer in the Netherlands. The most famous Surinamese products are Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard. Transvaal did manage to win the CONCACAF title in 1973 and 1981. The disinterest of Mexican and American clubs has always devalued the importance of the tournament, which began in 1962. Costa Rican clubs have won the title the last three years. With the win, Seattle advances to the quadrangular final of the 1996 edition of the CONCACAF Champions Cup in Guatemala City July 15-20, where it will face Cruz Azul and Necaxa of Mexico and Comunicaciones of Guatemala. The Sounders will be shooting to become the tournament’s first American champion. Scheduling conflicts ù which have plagued the tournament through the years ù prevented the competition from winding up last year. CONCACAF has reorganized the ’97 competition, which will provide automatic qualification for the American and Mexican champions. The finals will be held in Washington this August. The Guatemala City winner will qualify for the 1997 finals.
