The USA pulled off a World Cup shocker, beating Portugal 3-2 on June 5. The USA took a 3-0 lead on goals by John OÆBrien, a Portugal own goal (Jorge Costa deflecting a Landon Donovan cross into his own net) and Brian McBride (a diving header). Beto pulled Portugal — considered by many a World Cup favorite — within two goals six minutes before halftime. In the 71st minute, U.S. defender Jeff Agoos inadvertently hammered a close-range shot into his own net. The Americans kept the ball deep in the Portuguese half in the waning minutes and, at the final whistle, were able to celebrate their first World Cup win since their second game of the 1994 World Cup (2-1 vs. Colombia). The win guarantees a better U.S. finish than at France '98, when it lost all three games and managed just one goal. In addition to scoring the third U.S. goal, McBride was instrumental in the first. Portugal keeper Vitor Baia was unable to handle McBride's header, enabling OÆBrien to hammer home the rebound from inside the goal area.
