In order for retirement to sit well with 67-year-old Sir Alex Ferguson, he needs to have collected a little more hardware from continental competition to finish up his three-decade tenure at Manchester United, saying to CNN, “if we could win a couple more European trophies, I then would definitely quit.”
As successful as ManU has been under his 24-year reign (10 league titles, five FA Cups and three League Cups), Ferguson can’t help but look back at the lack of Euro titles, confessing, “I don’t think we’ve won the number we should have won,” and lamenting “years when we’ve been unlucky and years we’ve been disappointed, and there’ve been years when we’ve thrown games away.”
No matter what happens the rest of the way in the current Champions League competition, it’s unlikely ManU will need to fill the gaping void left by his retirement at least for the next few years. If and when they do, it’s going to be an “impossible” process, with Sir Alex thankfully stating, “I am glad it is not my decision.” “The club I joined in 1986 is nothing like the one it is today,” warned the legend, no doubt happy to have secured his position back when coaching jobs came with a little security.
