SMU’s Luchi Gonzalez and Penn State’s Christie Welsh claimed their second national player-of-the-year awards Thursday, adding the Missouri Athletic Club honor to the Hermann Trophies each won on Tuesday. The selections were announced during the unveiling of the NSCAA All-America teams at the Women’s College Cup in Dallas. Gonzalez, a senior forward, has scored 21 goals with 12 assists while leading the top-ranked Mustangs (21-0) into the NCAA Division I men’s quarterfinals, where SMU will face visiting St. John’s on Saturday night. Welsh, a junior striker, totaled 25 goals and 18 assists to lead the Nittany Lions (21-4-1) to the women’s quarterfinals, where they were beaten by North Carolina. Gonzalez was one of three SMU players selected to the NSCAA Division I Men’s All-America first team; he was joined by senior goalkeeper Byron Foss and senior midfielder Diego Walsh. Welsh also was joined by two teammates on the women’s first team: senior goalkeeper Emily Oleksiuk and sophomore midfielder Joanna Lohman. Santa Clara defender Danielle Slaton and UCLA forward Mary-Frances Monroe were selected for the first team, making them four-time NSCAA All-Americans. Ohio Wesleyan forward Katy Sturtz (Division III women) and Oklahoma Christian forward Tom Odhiambo (NAIA men) also were named to their fourth All-America team.
