Soccer America senior editor Scott French won the 2003 NSCAA Writing Contest award for best college story. His article, ''Clive Charles: 'I Owe This Game Everything''' appeared in the Jan. 20, 2003 issue of Soccer America Magazine.

''[Scott French's] interview with Portland coaching legend Clive Charles stood out in the College division,'' according to the contest's judges. ''French tackled the challenging Q&A reporting style with skill and finesse, creating a captivating piece that would be revisited by many readers when news spread of Charles' passing.''

Charles died on Aug. 26, 2003 after a three-year battle with cancer.

French's honor marked the 10th time that Soccer America has been an NSCAA Writing Contest winner. Dan Woog and Mike Woitalla were previous recipients.
