Losers

The COLUMBUS CREW, which rode an 18-game unbeaten streak into the playoffs, is out of the playoffs after losing the first-leg of their quarterfinal series, 1-0, to New England, then mustering only a 1-1 tie with the Revs.
Coach GREG ANDRULIS started recently signed Dante Washington over the team's leading scorers, Edson Buddle and Jeff Cunningham. In the 24th minute, referee ALEX PRUS did not show New England keeper Matt Reis a red card even though he upended Kyle Martino on a clear scoring opportunity. Reis, who did not even get a yellow card, saved the ensuing penalty kick by ROSS PAULE and later stopped a penalty kick by TONY SANNEH.

United's DEMA KOVALENKO and RYAN NELSEN each received yellow cards in the game and are suspended for the Eastern Conference title game with New England.

BERTI VOGTS has resigned as coach of Scotland, which is winless in World Cup qualifying play, citing "disgraceful abuse" by a "tiny minority" of fans. The German's two-and-a-half year tenure included an embarrassing 2-2 tie with the Faroe Islands and the failure to qualify for Euro 2004. Vogts said the abuse included being spat on. Vogts' World Cup qualifying results comprised of a loss to Norway and ties with Moldova and Slovenia.
