Sophomore Alyssa Ramsey totaled four goals and four assists and 13 of her teammates joined in the scoring as top-ranked North Carolina destroyed Georgia, 9-0, and Missouri, 7-0, in romping to the Duke adidas Classic title. Elizabeth Ball and Anne Morrell tallied twice apiece in the rout of Georgia (3-2-1), and 13 different players earned points in the victory over Missouri (5-2). Ramsey netted a hat trick with two assists in the first game and a goal and two assists in the second. No. 4. Portland captured the Nike Husky Classic in Seattle as freshman Christine Sinclair scored late winners in 2-1 victories over No. 12 Texas A&M and Brigham Young. No. 6 Washington managed just a 1-1 tie with BYU and was beaten, 1-0, by A&M on freshman Linsey Johnson’s 88th-minute strike. Laura Schott’s 83rd-minute goal lifted No. 13 California past third-ranked Santa Clara, 2-1, a rematch of an NCAA second-rounder last fall. An ailing Schott played only 15 minutes of that game. No. 17 Florida State grabbed an early advantage in the Atlantic Coast Conference, beating No. 7 Clemson, 3-2, on a late own goal, then getting past North Carolina State, 2-1, on Jez Ratliff’s overtime goal. No. 15 Miami fell to crosstown rival Florida International, 2-1, but bounced back to top Syracuse, 4-2, in its Big East opener. No. 9 Notre Dame continued to struggle while winning two Big East games. The Irish needed Amy Warner’s 115th-minute goal to overcome Villanova, 2-1, then outdueled Georgetown, 2-1, as Amanda Guertin curled home a corner kick in the 79th minute. 9/17 RANKING … TEAM (CURRENT RECORD) … 9/10 RANKING 1.
