Anson Dorrance moved within one victory of 500, St. Mary’s upset another Top 10 foe, Nebraska split its two-game trek to face Texas’ powers, and Florida claimed its 50th successive conference triumph during Week 7 of the college women’s season. Dorrance claimed wins Nos. 498 and 499 over the weekend, guiding No. 1 North Carolina to Atlantic Coast Conference victories over No. 12 Florida State (4-1) and No. 18 Wake Forest (1-0). Alyssa Ramsey scored a goal and added two assists and Anne Remy had a goal and an assist in the victory over Florida State, which left the Tar Heels the last unbeaten team in ACC play and catapulted them past the Seminoles into the conference lead. Wake Forest put up a tougher fight, but Maggie Tomecka’s third minute goal in a post-corner kick scramble stood up for UNC. Dorrance, who has led the Tar Heels to 17 national titles in 20 seasons, can claim win No. 500 on Thursday against Clemson at UNC’s Fetzer Field. Dorrance is 422-22-11 in 23 years at Chapel Hill. Surprising St. Mary’s — one of four unbeaten Division I squads (with UNC, UCLA and Pepperdine) — pulled off another road stunner, edging No. 3 Portland, 1-0, on freshman Katie Frattone’s 82nd-minute strike. The 19th-ranked Gaels, who knocked off then-No. 8 California in Berkeley nine days earlier, improved to 11-0-1. Seventh-ranked Nebraska’s trip to Texas, to face its top two challengers in the Big 12 Conference, was hit and miss. The Cornhuskers were tripped up at No. 17 Texas, which got two goals from freshman Kelly Wilson — her second successive two-goal match — to score a 2-1 victory. Two days later, Kori Saunders tallied twice in the second half to lead Nebraska past ninth-ranked Texas A&M, 4-2. Eighth-ranked Florida extended the nation’s longest conference winning streak to 50 games with a 4-1 Southeastern Conference romp at Arkansas. The Gators are closing in on North Carolina’s record streak of 55 games. In other action: ò No. 2 UCLA survived a scare against visiting Arizona State, rallying from an early two-goal deficit for a 3-2 Pacific-10 Conference victory on tallies by Mary-Frances Monroe, Kendal Billingsley and Stephanie Rigamat. Rigamat’s winner arrived in the 78th minute. ò No. 7 Clemson dropped its second Atlantic Coast Conference decision of the season, falling to Maryland, 1-0, on Audra Poulin’s 111th-minute finish. ò Pepperdine remained loss-less with a 4-1 romp over UC Irvine. Kristi Bissonnette leads the Waves (8-0-3) with 10 goals and three assists. Pepperdine meets up with St. Mary’s in a West Coast Conference showdown on Friday, one of five big games being contested in the Bay Area this week. UCLA visits Santa Clara on Thursday night, No. 14 Washington plays at California on Friday and at Stanford on Sunday, and Santa Clara battles St. Mary’s on Sunday in Moraga. 10/8 RANKING … TEAM (CURRENT RECORD) … 10/1 RANKING 1.
