Third-ranked Santa Clara swept No. 3 Portland and San Diego to claim the West Coast Conference title and grab an NCAA berth, one of four teams to nail down a spot in the NCAA tournament during Week 10 of the college women’s soccer season. Freshman defender Jessica Ballweg and sophomore forward Veronica Zepeda scored goals as the Broncos (16-2) held off visiting Portland, 2-0, in a showdown of the WCC’s most respected sides. San Diego, which began the weekend tied with Santa Clara for the WCC lead, dropped two matches, falling at St. Mary’s, 3-0, before the Broncos’ 2-0 triumph on Sunday. Santa Clara’s regular-season championship earns the WCC’s automatic bid to the 64-team NCAA field because the conference does not stage a postseason tournament. Cal State Fullerton, Loyola (Md.) and Southwest Texas State also claimed NCAA berths. Fullerton (12-6) claimed a share of the Big West Conference crown with a 5-2 romp in its showdown at UC Santa Barbara. One game remains, but the Titans can be caught only by UCSB. The Big West, too, does not use a tournament to select its NCAA qualifier. Loyola (9-8-2) won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament final in Orlando, beating MAAC regular-season titlist Marist, 1-0, on Katie Elliot’s goal just before halftime. Southwest Texas State (14-6) added the Southland Conference tournament title to its regular-season championship, beating visiting Southeastern Louisiana, 3-2, in the final as SLC MVP (and tournament MVP) Reta Derouin scored two goals. Denver (14-2-1) captured the Sun Belt Conference tournament in Miami, beating regular-season champion North Texas, 2-1, after knocking off host Florida International on penalty kicks in the semifinals. The SBC is the only Division I conference without an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. Princeton (12-1-2) claimed a share of the Ivy League title with a 1-1 tie at Penn (12-1-3). A victory would have secured an NCAA berth; with one game remaining, Penn and Dartmouth can catch the Tigers in the Ivy standings. Princeton finishes up Saturday against Yale. In the Pacific-10 — the fourth, and final, conference that selects its NCAA qualifier during the regular season — No. 2 Stanford and No. 4 UCLA share the top spot with two games to play. A showdown looms Sunday in Palo Alto, but the Cardinal (vs. USC) and Bruins (at California) must first win games on Friday. USC and Washington are one game behind the leaders. Stanford in Week 10 was upset in overtime at Arizona State, 1-0, but bounced back with a 5-0 rout at Arizona. UCLA swept its homestand against Washington (1-0) and Washington State (3-1) In other action: ò Nicky Thrasher scored her 13th and 14th goals of the season and added an assist to lead No. 7 Texas A&M to a 6-0 rout of No. 5 Texas, the Big 12 Conference champion, Friday night in Austin. The Aggies scored four first-half goals, including Thrasher’s pair in the first 14 minutes, to quickly put the result out of doubt. ò Ninth-ranked Notre Dame, No. 11 Connecticut, No. 19 West Virginia and Boston College advanced to the Big East Conference’s final four with quarterfinal victories Sunday. Amanda Guertin and Mia Sarkesian scored in Notre Dame’s 2-0 triumph over St. John’s, which set up a semifinal date Friday with BC. The Eagles got a goal and two assists from Meghan Moore in a 4-3 victory over Rutgers. Mary-Beth Bowie’s goal lifted UConn past Villanova, 1-0, and into a semifinal matchup vs. West Virginia, which topped Miami, 2-0. ò The Missouri Valley Conference tournament kicked off with quarterfinal victories by Creighton (2-0 over Indiana State) and Southwest Missouri State (3-1 over Drury). Top-seeded Illinois State will face SWM on Friday; Creighton meets Evansville. ò Lindsay Gusick netted both goals in Virginia’s 2-0 victory over Wake Forest, which gave the Cavaliers second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Florida State moved into third, with No. 12 Clemson, with a 2-0 win over No. 20 Maryland. ò Georgia ended visiting Tennessee’s hopes of claiming the Southeastern Conference’s Eastern Division title, claiming the third seed for the conference tournament with a 2-1 victory behind goals by Beth Culver and Andrea Velasco. No. 8 Florida, which romped to a 4-1 non-conference victory over No. 12 Clemson, finished first in the East and will be the No. 1 seed for the SEC tourney. ò Mississippi State and Auburn shared the SEC’s Western Division title. Jessi Moore’s goal with 16 seconds remaining in OT sent the Bulldogs past Ole Miss, 2-1, to earn the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament. Auburn grabbed its share with a 2-1 overtime triumph at Alabama, secured with Michelle Mione’s goal. ò Jennifer Cosnyka, Trish Bolander and Kami Kelley scored goals to lead visiting Weber State past Idaho State, 3-1, in the face-off for the Big Sky Conference title. The Wildcats take on Sacramento State in the conference tournament semifinals on Thursday. ò Goals by Tesia Kozlowski and Bridget Bushman lifted visiting Dayton past Massachusetts, 2-1, clinching its fourth successive Atlantic-10 championship. The Flyers, who extended their A-10 win streak to 19 games win a 4-0 romp at Rhode Island two days later, meets Xavier in the conference semifinals on Friday. ò James Madison’s Deanna Saracino scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over William & Mary that gave the Dukes a share of the Colonial Athletic Association title. William & Mary and George Mason also finished 4-1 in CAA play to earn pieces of the championship. ò BYU won the Mountain West championship, beating Utah, 3-0, as Aleisha Cramer contributed a goal and an assist. The Cougars get a first-round bye in the MWC Tournament. ò Nicki Pendleton’s goal carried Ohio University past lowly Akron, 1-0, to earn the Mid-American Conference championship. The Bobcats will face Ball State in a MAC Tournament opener on Tuesday. ò Quinnipiac gained the Northeast Conference crown as Elisa Goncalves tallied twice in a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart. ò Furman routed Citadel and UNC Greensboro topped Davidson to claim shares of the Southern Conference title, joining Western Carolina atop the standings. ò Boston University nailed down the America East Conference title with a 3-1 victory over Northeastern, finishing one point ahead of Hartford. ò Navy claimed the Patriot League title outright as Stacy Finley’s overtime goal earned a 1-0 victory over Bucknell. The Midshipmen will host the conference tournament beginning Friday. ò Marissa Venuti and Mackenzie Sisson combined for a pair of goals and three assists as Elon captured the Big South Conference title with a 4-0 romp over Coastal Carolina. The Phoenix earn a bye in the first round of the conference tournament. ò Central Florida’s 2-0 win at Jacksonville gave it sole possession of the Atlantic Sun title. The Golden Knights will face the Jacksonville-Georgia State winner in Friday’s conference semifinals. ò Nine teams finished their conference campaigns with perfect records: North Carolina (ACC, 7-0), Dayton (Atlantic-10, 10-0), Weber State (Big Sky, 6-0), Cincinnati (Conference USA, 10-0), UW Milwaukee (Horizon, 6-0), Oakland (Mid-Continent, 5-0), Illinois State (Missouri Valley, 6-0), Southeastern Missouri State (Ohio Valley, 5-0) and SMU (WAC, 8-0).
