Notre Dame and California took tumbles in the SA Top 20 while Florida climbed into the Top 10 for the first time this season. The Fighting Irish dropped from sixth to 11th after stumbling at Rutgers — their first loss of the season — then edging Seton Hall, which is 0-5 in Big Easy Conference play — on an 82nd-minute goal. Cal fell from eighth to 15th after losing at home in overtime to unbeaten St. Mary’s, then letting a two-goal advantage slip away in a 3-3 tie at lowly San Francisco. Florida jumped to eighth after beating Connecticut in Storrs, then routing Vanderbilt and Kentucky in Southeastern Conference action. Stanford and Santa Clara switched places after the Broncos’ 2-1 overtime win on the Farm, and Clemson, Texas A&M, Penn State, Florida State and Virginia moved up following impressive victories. Wake Forest returned to the Top 20 with wins over UNC Greensboro and Brigham Young, their third and fourth successive triumphs after starting 0-3-1 against top-notch competition. St. Mary’s, one of four unbeaten Division I teams (with No. 1 North Carolina, No. 2 UCLA and West Coast Conference rival Pepperdine) vaulted to 19th, and Georgia moved to 20th after victories over Georgia State and at Alabama and Auburn. Dropping out of the Top 20 are West Virginia (tied by Villanova), BYU (OT losses to Virginia and Wake Forest) and Tennessee (loss to Auburn).
