Five U.S. Olympic gold-medalists — Shannon Boxx, Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Briana Scurry and Abby Wambach — were among the 21 players nominated for the 2004 FIFA Women's Player of the Year, which will be awarded at the 14th FIFA World Player Gala Dec. 20 at the Zurich Opera House. This year voting has been expanded to include national team captains as well as coaches, but they are restricted to voting for players on the short list of nominees. On the men's side, FIFPro, the international players union, has been given a 20 percent stake in the voting.

Beginning in 2006, FIFA's women's youth championship will be an U-20 championship, instead of U-19 championship.
2010
The Women's World Cup will be staged in even years every four years, beginning in 2010 to allow a space of two years between Olympic women's soccer tournament and the Women's World Cup. A previous attempt by FIFA to move to the Women's World Cup to the same year as the men's world championship was reversed under pressure from women's soccer advocates who felt interest in the Women's World Cup would suffer if the two World Cups were played in the same year.
