Winners

BRIAN McBRIDE. The American striker scored his first goal of the season for Fulham with a 19-yard strike that took a deflection before flying into the top corner of Boston United's goal in the second round of the English League Cup Wednesday. Boston United, a fourth-tier team that started Paul Gascoigne, fell, 4-1, to Fulham, for which U.S. defender Carlos Bocanegra was sidelined with a muscle injury.

JOE ENOCHS. The 33-year-old has played for German Third Division club Osnabrueck since 1996, during which time it has twice been promoted to the Second Division and twice been relegated. On Tuesday, the defensive midfielder and Osnabrueck captain, who has one U.S. cap, scored a long-range goal against Bayern Munich in the second round of the German Cup that is expected to vie for Goal of the Month honors. Unfortunately, Roy Makaay's stoppage-time goal sank Enochs' team, 3-2.

KASEY KELLER. The American keeper, who has been on the bench all season for Tottenham's English Premier League games, saw action in a 6-0 English League Cup win at Oldham Wednesday.

HANNOVER. With Clint Mathis starting and playing 64 minutes while Steve Cherundolo rested, First Division Hannover 96 beat Second Division Energie Cottbus 4-3 on penalty kicks after their German Cup game ended 2-2. American defender Gregg Berhalter went the distance for Cottbus and converted his team's first penalty kick.

KEVIN KEEGAN. Manchester City coach Kevin Keegan, who seemed in danger of losing his job after a slow Premier League start, is in much better shape thanks to a 7-1 League Cup win over third-tier Barnsley on the heels of Saturday's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. American midfielder Claudio Reyna, who set up one of Nicolas Anelka's goals in the win over Crystal Palace, sat out the Barnsley game because of a muscle injury.

Losers

EDDIE LEWIS. The American winger set up Preston's final goal in a 4-0 League Cup win at fourth-tier Mansfield but was ejected after receiving his second yellow card, apparently for high-fiving a fan after that goal. Preston coach Billy Davies said, ''I'm absolutely astounded. He crossed the ball into the box and his momentum took him to the fans. He has raised his hands to stop himself going into the crowd.''

CONER CASEY. In a German Cup game against Karlsruhe, the U.S. striker saw his penalty kick saved in the shootout that Mainz lost, 3-0, after a 1-1 tie.

READING. With Marcus Hahnemann in goal and Bobby Convey making his first start since a Aug. 21 league game, Reading fell 3-0 to Watford in the English League Cup.
