WINNERS
COLORADO knocked Kansas City out of first place and took the Western Conference lead with a 3-1 win over the Wizards on goals by Mark Chung (PK), Jordan Cila and Kyle Beckerman. Rapids' keeper Joe Cannon, who was beaten from the penalty spot by Josh Wolff on the game's first goal, saved Wolff's second penalty kick of the day. Both Kansas City penalty kicks were awarded for fouls on Wolff by Cannon.
JAIME MORENO notched three assists, on two goals by ALECKO ESKANDARIAN and one by Freddy Adu, helping D.C. United to a 3-0 win over the Dallas Burn. D.C. moved past Chicago for third place in the Eastern Conference.
STEVE SAMPSON celebrated his first win as head coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy thanks to 2-1 win over archrival San Jose on goals by Sasha Victorine and substitute Arturo Torres. Sampson, who took over for Sigi Schmid, fired despite having the Galaxy in first place, had a tie and a loss under his belt before Saturday's victory before a soldout crowd (27,000) at the Home Depot Center. The Galaxy is tied for second in the West with Kansas City and is one point behind first-place Colorado.
LOSERS
Referee MARK HALSEY called a penalty kick for Fulham against Arsenal, then reversed the decision after vehement protests by Arsenal players prompted him to consult his linesman. Halsey also called back what looked like a legitimate Fulham goal by Collins John and failed to call a penalty kick for Arsenal after Thierry Henry was hammered in the Fulham area. On changing his mind on the first penalty kick, Halsey said, ''… the players' reactions from both sides put a little bit of doubt in my mind,'' to which Fulham coach Chris Coleman asked, ''Did anyone see my players ask him not to give a penalty?'' (American Carlos Bocanegra played the full 90 for Fulham and compatriot Brian McBride came on as a late sub.)
JUAN RAMON PAREDES. El Salvador fired coach Juan Ramon Paredes on Friday, two days after the team's 3-0 loss at home to Jamaica in a World Cup qualifier left it last in CONCACAF's Group A.
FRANCISCO de ANDA. The Mexican defender missed two penalty kicks in eight minutes as his team, Pachuca, tied Atlante, 1-1. His first hit the post and the second soared over the crossbar.
